3

Understand how landforms appear on maps

Genesis 1:10

God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters he called Seas. God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:10 (WEB)

  • Green paper
  • Labels or small sticky notes
  • Plastic knife or craft stick
  • Small globe

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and show a globe. Ask them to point out land and water. Explain that today we'll create our own landforms using play dough.

💭 Review Question: Can you show me where the land is on this globe?
2Teaching (7 min)

Today we will learn about different landforms. Landforms are shapes of land on Earth. Some are tall like mountains, some are flat like plains, and some are low like valleys.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Mountains are high places on Earth
  • Valleys are low areas between hills or mountains
  • Plains are flat areas of land
  • God created all these wonderful landforms
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What landforms have you seen before?
  • Do you remember what a mountain looks like?
  • Can you describe a valley?
3Activity: Landform Creation (10 min)
hands-on

Students will create landforms using play dough on blue paper (representing water).

📝 Instructions:
  1. Take green play dough
  2. Create a tall mountain by rolling and pushing up dough
  3. Make a flat plain by smoothing dough
  4. Create a valley by making two hills with a space between
  5. Label each landform with a sticky note
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Teacher helps students shape basic landforms

Challenge: Students create more complex landform combinations

4Closing (3 min)

Share and discuss the landforms created

📝 Review Questions:
  • What landform did you make?
  • How is a mountain different from a valley?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank You for creating such wonderful and beautiful land for us to explore.

Coming up: Next week, we'll learn more about how water moves on Earth!

Psalm 104:5

He laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be moved forever.

Psalm 104:5 (WEB)

🎯 Activity: Trace the outline of a mountain while saying the verse
