Learning Objectives

1

Understand that a print is an image copied multiple times

2

Demonstrate how to transfer an image from one surface to another

3

Develop curiosity about creating art through printing techniques

Exodus 28:36

You shall make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it, like the engravings of a signet: 'HOLY TO YAHWEH.'

Exodus 28:36 (WEB)

Just as the engraving creates a repeated, meaningful image, printmaking allows us to reproduce a design multiple times

📦 Materials Needed

  • foam sheets or styrofoam trays
  • tempera paint
  • brayer or sponge
  • white paper
  • pencils
  • wet wipes for cleanup

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse art adventure! Last week, we explored how artists like Monet used light and color. Today, we'll discover a magical art technique called printmaking.

💭 Review Question: Can you remember what we learned about painting water lilies?
2Teaching (12 min)

Printmaking is like making a special stamp that can create the same picture over and over again. Imagine drawing a picture once, but being able to share it many times!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Prints are created by transferring ink or paint from one surface to another
  • Artists can make multiple copies of the same image
  • Printmaking is used in books, posters, and many types of art
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What things do you see around you that might have been made using printing?
  • How is a print different from drawing something each time?
3Activity: My First Print (14 min)
demonstration and hands-on practice

Create a simple print using foam and paint

📝 Instructions:
  1. Draw a simple shape on your foam sheet with a pencil
  2. Press firmly to make a clear indentation
  3. Spread a thin layer of paint on the foam
  4. Carefully press the foam onto white paper
  5. Lift the foam to reveal your print!
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Help child trace a simple shape like a heart or star

Challenge: Create a print with multiple colors or a more complex design

4Closing (4 min)

Let's review what we learned about prints today!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What makes a print special?
  • How did we create our print today?

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll explore making prints with different objects like leaves and bottle caps!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Printmaking introduces children to the concept of reproducible art and helps develop fine motor skills

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Protect work surfaces with newspaper or a plastic tablecloth
  • Demonstrate each step slowly and clearly
  • Praise effort over perfection
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might press too hard or get frustrated if their print isn't perfect

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Excitement about creating multiple copies of their artwork

Extension Activities

  • Create a print card to send to a grandparent
  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library for additional printing worksheets
  • Discuss how God creates each person uniquely, just like each print is special
