Learning Objectives

1

Understand the concept of foreground, middle ground, and background in art

2

Create a simple landscape drawing with three distinct spatial layers

3

Appreciate God's creative design in nature's depth and perspective

Genesis 1:31

God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.

Genesis 1:31 (WEB)

Just as God created landscapes with depth and beauty, children will explore creating art with layers and perspective

📦 Materials Needed

  • Drawing paper
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • BibleMouse Resource Guide: Grade 1 Art

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Let's explore how artists create depth in their drawings! Remember how we learned about big and small, and how things look different up close and far away?

💭 Review Question: Can you remember what we learned about objects looking bigger or smaller depending on how close they are?
2Teaching (10 min)

Today in our BibleMouse art lesson, we'll learn about landscape layers. Imagine looking out a window and seeing grass in front, then trees, then hills in the distance.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Foreground is the closest part of the picture
  • Middle ground is in the middle distance
  • Background is the farthest part of the picture
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What might be in the foreground of a picture?
  • What could we draw in the background?
3Activity: Landscape Layer Adventure (15 min)
hands-on

Create a landscape with three layers: foreground, middle ground, and background

📝 Instructions:
  1. Draw a horizontal line about 1/3 up from the bottom of the paper
  2. Draw another line about 2/3 up from the bottom
  3. In the bottom section, draw grass and flowers (foreground)
  4. In the middle section, draw trees or a house (middle ground)
  5. In the top section, draw hills and sky (background)
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use larger shapes and fewer details

Challenge: Add more details like clouds, animals, or additional landscape elements

4Closing (5 min)

Let's look at our beautiful landscapes and talk about the different layers we created!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What is in the foreground of your picture?
  • What did you draw in the background?

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll draw a view from our own backyard and practice what we learned today!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Children are learning spatial relationships and how to represent depth in art

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Encourage creativity and don't worry about perfection
  • Help child understand layers if they struggle
  • Use gentle guidance, not criticism
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might find it challenging to create distinct layers

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Attempt to create depth, understanding of foreground and background

Extension Activities

  • Take a nature walk and discuss foreground, middle ground, and background in real landscapes
  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library for additional landscape drawing worksheets
