Learning Objectives

1

Understand how light creates shadows on objects

2

Draw basic still life with light and shadow techniques

3

Develop observation skills and attention to detail

John 8:12

Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.'

John 8:12 (WEB)

Just as light reveals the details and shapes of objects, Jesus reveals God's truth and brings clarity to our understanding

📦 Materials Needed

  • Drawing paper
  • Pencils
  • Simple objects (fruit or toys)
  • Lamp or bright light source
  • BibleMouse Art Sketchbook

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse art adventure! Yesterday we learned about adding details to our drawings. Today, we'll explore how light makes objects look three-dimensional.

💭 Review Question: What details did you add to your drawing yesterday?
2Teaching (12 min)

Light helps us see the shape of things. When light hits an object, some parts are bright and some parts are dark. These areas help us understand the object's shape.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Light comes from a source like the sun or a lamp
  • Bright areas show where light hits directly
  • Shadows form on the opposite side of the light
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you find a light source in our room?
  • Where do you see shadows right now?
3Activity: Shadow Detective Drawing (14 min)
hands-on

Set up a simple still life with a few objects and a bright light. Observe how light creates shadows.

📝 Instructions:
  1. Place objects on a white surface
  2. Position a lamp to create clear shadows
  3. Lightly sketch the objects' basic shapes
  4. Add darker lines where shadows appear
  5. Use lighter pencil strokes where light hits directly
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use fewer objects and a very bright light

Challenge: Try drawing the same objects from different angles

4Closing (3 min)

Let's review what we learned about light and shadows!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What makes shadows appear?
  • How can we show depth in a drawing?

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll add color to our still life drawings and explore how colors can show light and shadow
